East West Brewing is an airy, cavernous space close to the tourist-friendly Ben Thanh market in District 1. Upon climbing the stairs and being greeted by the sweet hostesses, you are faced with the sight of the company’s on-site brewing apparatus. If you are hunting down some original and quality craft brewing, it is clear you will be in safe hands.
But it is not just the beer that is recommended here – it is the Kegs ‘n’ Eggs Sunday brunch. For a fixed price there are so many options to choose from, both buffet and table-service. The cold buffet bar includes sweet and savoury options from breakfast pastries, fruit and yogurt to salads, cold cuts, cheeses and some great chilled seafood. Orders can also be placed for unlimited brunch plates including classics such as eggs Benedict, omelettes and three varieties of tacos. Also on offer are some Vietnamese-leaning options like a duck confit Bánh Mì and the Vietnamese beef stew bò kho. Worth a mention, finally, are the side dishes one of which is just a huge plate of BACON. Proper crispy bacon is a rare find in Saigon and it is cooked to perfection here.
Included in the brunch deal is a free-flow bar encompassing all of the company’s own craft beers, sparkling wine, extremely tempting Saigon Rosé mimosas and (for the brunch purists) bloody marys, together with coffees, smoothies and juices.
The brunch is terrific value, and the staff do a great job dealing with the constant stream of orders. The soundtrack, which varies from hip hop to classic rock, adds to the happy atmosphere.
A special mention on my most recent visit to the executive chef Matt, who took it upon himself to craft a special plate of salmon and crispy Brussels sprouts for one of my friends with dietary restrictions.
